German research organization explores working with university
Dr. Alexander Michaelis, Institute Director, Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (FICTS) visited the BioCentury Research Farm (BCRF) to explore possible collaborations. The FICTS is part of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a major international research organization made up of seven groups in information and communication technology, life sciences, microelectronics, light and surfaces, production, materials and components, and defense and security.
BCRF provides milling services to industry clients
The BCRF provided biomass feedstock preparation services to two clients. For the first project, 8 tons of corn stover and 4 tons of switchgrass were processed using the Vermeer BP-8000 round bale processor. The ground material was sent to the company where they tested the compatibility of the feedstocks with current equipment and prototype units.
For the second project, the BCRF prepared over 300 kilograms of wheat straw and tested various stover preparation methods for an Austrian company that specializes in developing processes to make chemicals from plant material. The Vermeer BP-8000 round bale processor, the stationary hammermill and other equipment were used to mill and prepare the feedstocks. The prepared materials were sent to various places in Europe for evaluation and testing.
